ClearSQL 5.0 preview

Working with large to very large collections of PL/SQL code files is a complex process. PL/SQL developers can spend much of their time diving into poorly written, sparsely documented legacy code. While this code can be compiled to get the job done, it can remain virtually unreadable, hard to maintain and difficult to debug. To solve this problem,
Conquest Software Solutions provides ClearSQL for Oracle, a powerful and flexible tool that gives PL/SQL developers the confidence to obtain, maintain, test, format and automatically review PL/SQL scripts.

ClearSQL for Oracle is a very powerful and easy to use code review and quality control tool for Oracle PL/SQL. Edit, format and analyze Oracle PL/SQL code. Count metrics and enforce coding standards. ClearSQL for Oracle is a full-blown code analyzer and editor for legacy code maintenance. Analyze declarations, exceptions, and the control flow and remove anomalies. Fix and format your PL/SQL code automatically. Flowchart legacy code to discover the logic, visualize the conditional branches, loops and jumps, in order to see the visual patterns of your code. ClearSQL also creates Call Tree diagrams.

Many users from all over the world, including globally known companies, are successfully using ClearSQL for Oracle to ensure that their PL/SQL developments will meet their coding standards and to ensure production status for their large amount of PL/SQL legacy code.

The targets for the development of ClearSQL for Oracle 5.0 have been the following:

  • adding important new features
  • strongly improving existing features
  • strongly improving user interface for better usability
  • improving analyzer performance

This is a preliminary overview what has been developed so far and what is planned to be included in the final version of ClearSQL for Oracle 5.0:

  • clickable Flowcharts, Call Tree diagrams and CRUD matrix; click on a element in a diagram and the related file will be loaded into the editor and the corresponding line of code will be highlighted
  • new and greatly improved Project Tree
    • new and more detailed Parser Statuses
    • filter Project Tree items by Parser Status and/or by File Name
    • sort Project Tree items by Parser Status or File Name
    • many usability improvements
  • dramatically improved Parser/Analyzer performance (!!)
    • Example 1: analyzing 311 PL/SQL files - 12,5 MB, Procedures, Packages, Package Bodies,
Triggers, live files from a user: 2min 25sec
    • Example 2: analyzing 799 PL/SQL files - 17,1 MB, Procedures, Packages, Package Bodies,
Triggers, live files from a user: 10min 37sec
    • Example 3: analyzing 33402 PL/SQL files - 48,7 MB, live files from a user: 167min 17sec
REMARK - all mentioned performance benchmarks are made while analyzing without flowchart and/or
    Call Tree creation

  • CRUD matrix - the purpose of this matrix is to illustrate the relationships between processes and the data
    they use
  • new Call Tree creation and handling procedures
  • CRUDE and Call Tree's are linked in certain situations
  • newly developed "NEW PROJECT and/or IMPORT Wizard"; a very comfortable way to import from files (even very large numbers!), storage devices or objects from databases
  • new project Analysis Report; very detailed and easy to navigate, flexible to configure by the user
  • new and improved script/file version handling
  • integrated OSD-Online Support Desk
  • application architecture related changes and modifications
    • to ensure high performance while analyzing scripts/files (see above benchmarks)
    • importing projects from previous ClearSQL versions
    • improving stability and reliability issues
  • Parser improvements and fixes
  • general improvements to ClearSQL's user interface
  • many other improvements and fixes....

The final production version of ClearSQL for Oracle 5.0 is planned to be released beginning of September 2009. See the first screenshots and take a sneak preview using the menu link above. All screenshots have been taken from an early ClearSQL for Oracle 5.0 beta release.
